Dale Harry Edwards, 68, of North Catasauqua, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, June 22, 2012. He and his wife Shirley (Engler) Edwards of Wilkes Barre, were married 46 years ago on August 14, 1965. Born in Plainfield, NJ, he was the son of the late Harry J. and Alverna (Bohlander) Edwards of Wilkes Barre, Pa.
Dale was a 1961 graduate of E. L. Meyers High School, in Wilkes Barre where he played football and wrestled. He graduated from Wilkes University in 1965, where he earned a BS degree in Secondary Education. While at Wilkes he played football and was named Outstanding Lineman in his senior year. He earned his Master’s Degree in Education from Lehigh University.
Dale's teaching career began in 1965 and spanned 32 years at Catasauqua High School, where he taught 20th Century American Cultures, Television and Media Production and served as the Audio Visual Coordinator. From 1965 to 1968 he served as an assistant football coach under Bill Kennedy, and from 1968 to 1979 as the head football coach for the Catasauqua Rough Riders. He also served as an assistant wrestling coach under LeRoy Bolmer from 1965 – 1974.
Since retiring from teaching, Dale has spent considerable time volunteering within the community of Catasauqua. He was an active member of his church, St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Northampton, where he served on numerous committees. He volunteered with Catasauqua Community Partnerships, primarily with the Catasauqua Food Bank. As an Eagle Scout he became involved with Boy Scout Troop 94 where he served as an assistant leader.
Besides his wife, Dale is survived by two daughters, Dawn Marie, wife of Philip Fisher, Jr., and their children, Maxwell and Katherine, and Heidi Lynn Edwards. Both live in Catasauqua. He is also survived by three brothers, David and his wife Esther, of Dauphin, PA; twin, Dennis and his wife Janice, of Springville, PA; and Kenneth and his wife Alexis of Wyoming, PA; a niece and 5 nephews.
Service of Celebration of Life and Commitment will be held on Saturday, August 4th at 11:00 a.m. in the Catasauqua High School Auditorium 2500 Bullshead Road Northampton, Pa. 18067. The family will greet friends in the school rotunda from 9:30-11am prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Dale's name to the Memorial Fund at St. Paul's UCC, Northampton, or to Catasauqua Boy Scout Troop 94, in care of the Brubaker Funeral Home, Third and Walnut Sts., Catasauqua, PA, 18032.
