Obituary for Alfred E. Tullock, Sr.
Alfred E. Tullock, Sr., 92 of N. Catasauqua, passed away peacefully at Whitehall Manor, in Fullerton, October 2, 2014. Al was born on October 26, 1921 in Cementon, Pa, to the late John H. and Anna A.(Cesanek) Tullock. His wife, the former Caroline A. Wunderly, passed away in October, 2002 after 60 years of marriage. He graduated from Whitehall High School in 1939. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Camp Orinoco, Va., attaining the position of Assistant Education Administrator. On completion of his enlistment, he returned home to Cementon. In January 1942, he and his brother enlisted in the Army Air Corp. After training, he was assigned to the 83rd Squadron, the 9th Air Force, the 12th Bombardment Group. He served as a top turret gunner on the B-25 Mitchell bomber. He completed over 54 missions (215 sorties) fighting in Campaigns: East, West Battles for North Africa, Sicily, Crete and Italy. He returned to the States for retraining/refitting with his squadron in April 1945. He was discharged in July 1945. He received the Meritorious Unit Award, 2 Purple Hearts, the European African Middle Service Medal with 5 bronze battle stars, the Air Medal with 4 battle stars, WWII Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal . After his service, he was employed in the plumbing and heating business as a master plumber. Eventually, his working career took him to Durkee Famous Foods and a long career in maintenance. He retired as a maintenance supervisor. He resided initially in Catasauqua, then relocated to North Catasauqua, where he lived for over 50 years. He enjoyed gardening, vacationing with his family at the shore and fishing in Canada. He is survived by his son, Alfred, Jr. (wife Carol), daughter Carol Ann (wife of Michael Bodnar), son James (wife Deborah), daughter Susan (wife of Carson Smith); 9 Grandchildren and 17 Great Grandchildren; sisters Dorothy Oranczak and Catherine Pritchard; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother John and sisters Irene Butryn and Ann Foley. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am Monday October 6th, 2014 in St. Mary’s Church 122 Union Street, Catasauqua, Pa. 18032. His viewing will be from 9:30-10:30am Monday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made in his name payable to the church.
