Obituary for Bruce B. Smith
Bruce B. Smith, of Palmer Township, passed away Saturday, June 9th, at home, surrounded by his family and friends.
He was the companion of Karen M. Shriver with whom he shared his life for (22) years. Born in Catasauqua, March 2, 1949, Smith was the son of the late Harry B. and Dorothy M. (Fink) Smith, Jr. After graduating from Catasauqua High School in 1967 he attended Husson University, Bangor, ME receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. After graduating from Husson Bruce served his country in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard receiving an honorable discharge.
Smith was vice president of the W.J. Smith Candy Co., Inc., a wholesaler of tobacco and candies, as well as, manufacturer of “Smith’s Candies” until 1977 when it ceased operations.
Bruce was a lifetime member of Christ United Church of Christ Schoenersville where he served many years on church council as a deacon, elder, and church council president. As elder, he also served on the spiritual council. Smith also was a veteran active firefighter for 33 years with the Catasauqua Fire Department and attained the rank of captain with the East End Hose and Chemical Co. at that time. He also belonged to the Rotary Club of Catasauqua serving as president and also on the board of directors. He was a lifetime member of Porter Lodge #284 F & AM. He also served on the Catasauqua Halloween Parade Committee, was band chairman for the 1995 Four County Fireman’s Parade in Catasauqua, band chairman for the 2000 Four County Fireman’s Parade in Catasauqua and N. Catasauqua, and parade band chairman and closing ceremony chairman in 2003 for the Sesquicentennial of Catasauqua. Smith created a program entitled “A Pathway to Santa” in 2010 as he battled Stage 3 non-small cell lung cancer. Up to the present this event for the cancer patients both out-patient and in-patient has given over $268,000 in gift certificates, gift cards and tangible items to all patients so that they feel a part of the Christmas holidays and know they are not forgotten.
Survivors in addition to his companion are his daughters, Kimberly Ann Smith and Carrie Mae Smith both of North Catasauqua along with his grandchildren Brittney Ann and Branden Michael Bilheimer.
His calling period will be held Saturday, June 23rd at Christ United Church of Christ Schoenersville from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon followed by the funeral service with Reverend Catherine A. Strouse officiating. Interment will be at Schoenersville Cemetery located at Airport and Grove Roads, Hanover Township, Lehigh County. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Christ UCC Schoenersville, 5050 Airport Road, Allentown, PA 18109.
