Obituary for Deborah A. Nothstein
Deborah A. Nothstein, 54 years of N. Catasauqua died suddenly Tuesday March 16, 2010 in Lehigh Valley Hospital Center, Salisbury Twsp. She was married to Bill Nothstein and would have celebrated their 32nd anniversary on August 26, 2010. Born in N. Catasauqua she was the daughter of John and Rose (Szoke) Marhefka of N. Catasauqua. Deb worked for the past eleven years as a secretary for both the Sheckler Elementary School and Administration Office of the Catasauqua Area School District. Prior to this she and her husband Bill operated their own floral design business as well as worked for Floraldec International where they assisted in the operation of the retail business and taught design classes. During this time she also worked for Creative Graphics as a typist. Deb had worked as a secretary to Catasauqua School District’s Superintendent, Frank Farrell, from 1973 until 1985. Deborah was a lifetime member of St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church, N. Catasauqua. She was a thirty year member of the Marian Guild serving as president and treasurer. Deb was a coordinator of lectors, Eucharistic ministers and altar servers. She coordinated church decorating for holiday events as well as singing on the church choir, assisting in making perogies for church fund raisers, she taught vacation bible school and was a member of the liturgical committee. She assisted the Catasauqua High School drama society, Catasauqua Area Showcase Theatre, Catasauqua High School band parents, PA Youth theater productions and served as the Scheckler Elementary Home and School Fundraising coordinator for seven years. Surviving along with her husband and parents are her son, Gregory of Montgomery County and her daughter Bethany Nothstein, a student of Wagner College; sisters Annette and her husband Jim Englert of Catasauqua, and Michele, wife of the late Michael Hillpot of Bethlehem; mother-in-law, Nancy Nothstein of Palmerton; sister-in-law Paula and her husband Mark Semmel of Palmerton; nieces Rosemary, Jessica and Andrea Englert, Denise Hillpot; nephews Dennis Hillpot and Steven and Matthew Semmel. Memorial services have been relocated to the Catasauqua High School Auditorium, 2500 West Bullshead Road, Northampton, 18067 at 1:30pm Saturday, March 20, 2010. Following the service, at 3pm the family will be hosting a memorial reception and calling period at the Sheckler Elementary School, 201 N. 14th Street, Catasauqua, PA. In lieu of flowers please make memorial contributions in her name, payable to the Brubaker Funeral Home to be used to establish a fund which will be used to assist needy students and their families to be known as “Mrs. Nothstein’s Helping Hands”.
