Obituary for Donald J. Close
Donald J. Close, 86, of Whitehall, passed away December 26 in Whitehall. Born in Allentown, he was the son of the late Richard V. and Florence (Ellwood) Close. A WWII veteran, he was a corporal in the Army Air Corp and later served in the navy. A graduate of Penn State University, he received his B.S. and M.S. degrees. Donald was a Hydrologist-In-Charge for the National Weather Service at the Ohio River Forecast Center, Cincinnati, Ohio, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception BVM Catholic Church, Allentown and a member of the Knights of Columbus Calvary Council, #528, Allentown. From 1962-1964, he served in the Peace Corp. His memberships included the American Legion Post #739, Hokendauqua, the Allentown Firemen's Relief Assocation and the former Haraguri Club, Allentown. He was a past treasurer of the Coplay-Whitehall Sewer Authorizty. Survivors: sisters, Florence A. Close and Mary R. Yudt, both of Whitehall; nieces; nephews; great-nieces and nephews; great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Close. Services:Mass, 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 31, 2013, Immaculate Conception BVM Church, 501 Ridge Ave., Allentown preceded by a viewing from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. in the church.
