Obituary for Erwin "Reds" L. Decker
Erwin “Reds” L. Decker, 90 years old, of Catasauqua, died Thursday November 19th, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Dolores (Novich) Decker, daughter of the late John and Anna Novich, and they had celebrated 66 years of marriage together this past February. Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late John and Stella (Artopher) Decker.
Reds was a graduate of Allentown High School’s class of 1943. He enlisted and honorably served his country in the Army Air Corp during World War II. Reds received from Lehigh University his Bachelor and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1949 and 1954, respectively. He worked for the former Fuller Company (now FL Smidth) for over 41 years. He was a registered professional engineer and was the recipient of several patents. Reds held four Vice President position’s with Fuller Co., including V.P. of Engineering; V.P. of GLW Products; Senior V.P. of International and V.P. of Operations. His positions at Fuller Co. took him to many parts of the world including India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Mexico and Korea for project work and to Canada, England, Spain, Germany, France, South Africa, Australia, India and Mexico for international business.
Reds gave his time to many civic organizations in Catasauqua, such as the Planning Commission; Zoning Board; School Advisory Committee; School Director; United Way Fund; Chamber of Commerce; Rotary Club; Director of Catasauqua National Bank; Fuller Co. Explorer Post Scout Troop and the Catasauqua YMCA. He was a member of the Lehigh County Community College Board; the Lappawinzo Rod and Gun Club and the Lehigh Country Club. He and Dolores loved to dance and were members of Cotillion and MSA Dance Clubs. He was a “do-it-yourself” kind of person and liked woodworking and baking bread. For many years Reds enjoyed golfing, playing racquetball, chess, and cards.
Surviving along with his wife Dolores, are his three daughters Barbara Decker of Orefield, PA; Maryann Muschlitz wife of Roger Muschlitz from Danielsville, PA and Margaret Decker of Malvern; and his five grandchildren, Barbara’s sons, Evan and Eric; and Margaret’s children Blaine, Lauren and Allison. Reds was predeceased by a brother and sister.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10am Wednesday November 25th, 2015 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church, 618 Fullerton Ave., Whitehall, PA 18052. There will be a calling period to greet the family from 9-10am at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Catasauqua Public Library, 302 Bridge St., Catasauqua, PA 18032.
