On April 3, 2024, Fern Mae Smale Serfass, aged 97 years, quietly passed away. Fern was born on 3/30/1927 to Florence Burger Smale and Arlington Smale. As a child raised in her grandparents’ General Store, Fern was kept busy learning needlework, embroidery, crocheting, and (later) quilting. She attended Polk HS and then graduated from Churchman’s Business College in Easton, PA.
After her marriage to Stanley Serfass, Fern worked as private secretary to Mr. Churchman, Kresgeville Manufacturing Co., retiring as librarian secretary from Pleasant Valley HS. During this time she also raised her two children, Jean and Stan.
Fern devoted herself to quilting, finishing at least 101 quilts in her lifetime. This endeavor got the attention of local newspapers in 2001 when her talents were acknowledged. Fern’s favorite quilt is the “Crazy Quilt” and believing that every quilt has a story to tell.
Fern was very fond of her circle of close friends and family, and delighted in card games, assisting at her church, summers in Ontario and winters in Florida.
Fern was pre-deceased by her husband, Stanley Serfass. She is survived by her daughter Jean (Terry) Theman, son Stan (Amy) Serfass, grandchildren Jennifer Kaufmann, Chris Tworkowsky (Tasha), Kate Tworkowsky, and great grandchildren Tanner, Emory and Hank.
