Obituary for Florence H. Benson
Florence H. Benson, 77, of Allentown, formerly of Port Morris, NJ passed away Tuesday November 25, 2008 at Lehigh Valley Hospice after a prolonged illness. She was married to Dr. Kenneth E. Benson of Allentown and recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary this year. Born in Port Morris, NJ she was a daughter of the late Robert and Agnes (Rudinsky) Henderson. Florence graduated from Trenton State College, NJ and also obtained her master degrees from Rutgers University, NJ and Kutztown University. Early in her career she was a teacher in Chatham, NJ and after raising her family became a guidance counselor/psychologist for the Carbon Lehigh IU followed by a private counseling practice. Florence was an active member of the Asbury United Methodist Church where she was a trustee for many years. She also taught Adult Sunday School and Bible Study Groups. She thoroughly enjoyed studying the Bible and Biblical Scholars and had also been a lay minister. Florence is survived by her husband Kenneth, and sons Kenneth Jr. and his wife Barbara of Hesperia, CA and Dr. Craig Benson and his wife Karen of Seattle, WA.; two grandsons Kenneth III of Hesperia CA and Austin R. of Seattle, WA.; two brothers-in-law: H. J. Benson and family of Fresno, CA and J.W. Benson and family of Dayton, OH, one sister-in-law Mary Henderson of Port Morris, NJ; four nieces: Florence DeGraw, Kathleen Prystash, Darlene Thompson, Maryellen Malone, and nephews: Robert Cole, Donald Cole Jr., Robert Henderson Jr. and Thomas Henderson all of Northern New Jersey and Kevin Ray of Indianapolis, IN. She was preceded in death by a sister Kathleen Cole of Ledgewood, NJ, a brother Robert Henderson Sr. of Port Morris and a sister-in-law Ella Ray of Indianapolis, IN. A memorial service will be 11:00am Saturday December 27, 2008 in Asbury United Methodist Church 1533 Springhouse Road Allentown, Pa. 18104. A calling hour will be in the church from 10:00am until 11:00am Saturday. The family would like to extend their most sincere thanks to all those who gave their support and love to Florence and Ken during this time of sickness.
