Obituaries
Harvey L. Emert, III, 78, of Catasauqua, died unexpectedly at his home November 12, 2022. He was the husband of Eugenia A. (Menio) Emert of Catasauqua and celebrated 45 years of marriage together last year. Born in Pottstown, he was a son of the late Harvey L. Jr. and Alice (Henry) Emert.
Harvey was a 1961 graduate of Catasauqua High School. He served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Greenland and Germany. After the service, Harvey received his Associates Degree in Fire Technology and began a lifelong career in firefighting. He served as a volunteer fireman in a variety of capacities for the Catasauqua Fire Department for 55 years. He was an association officer , and served as Deputy Chief, Captain of the Fire Police and a member of Firemen Relief. Harvey worked as a firefighter for A.B.E. Airport (LVIA) for 17 years. He also worked in code enforcement for a variety of municipalities and construction companies around the Lehigh Valley.
Harvey was an active member of St. Mary’s in Catasauqua where he was member of the choir and helped with men’s group bingo, the block party, and church dinners. He was also an integral part of the Catasauqua Food Bank, volunteering to help in their efforts week after week.
Harvey actively volunteered in many organizations. They include:
*1969 – Present – Member of Catasauqua Fire Dept. – positions held, firefighter, Lieutenant, Deputy Chief and currently Sergeant of the Fire Department.
*1986 – Present – Served on the Catasauqua Borough Sewer Authority, serving as Treasurer for many years.
*2002 – Present – Member of the Catasauqua Emergency Management Agency
*1990 – Present – Cub Pack 94 and Boy Scout Troop 94 – Cubmaster, Webelos Leader and Trainer, Scoutmaster A, Merit Badge Counselor, Committee Member – Received the 1991, 1994 Patriots Award, 1996 Owl Award
*1999 – Recipient of the Bishop’s Award for the Allentown Diocese – Catholic committee
*1994 – Present – Member of Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm, Stroudsburg – volunteering for festivals and other activities om the farm – 2002 – 2006 – Served on the Board of Directors for Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm, Stroudsburg
*2001 – 2007 – Musikfest and Chriskindlmart Volunteer
*1993 and 1994 – Member of the cast for Catasauqua Area Showcase Theatre for “Wizard of Oz” and “Annie Get Your Gun” – Acting as well as building sets
*1993 – 1994 – Assistant coach for the Catasauqua Youth Soccer Association
*1994 – 2001 – 4-H leader for Neffs Cloverettes and served on the Board of the 4H Development Board, 2005 – served as Vice President, 2007 – 2008 – serving as President 2000 – Host parent for a Japanese exchange student
*St Mary’s Church – sang on the church choir, helped with the men’s group bingo and church dinners, helped with St. Mary’s Block Party and was Block Party Chairman for several years. Participated in the RICIA program.
Harvey was the unofficial Mayor of East Catty. He always had a smile on his face and a helping hand.
Above all he was a family man. He was a devoted husband and father and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Surviving along with his wife Eugenia are daughter Jillian K. Emert and fiancé Jonathan Keichel; son Harvey L. IV and wife Tammy; sister Lillian Serfass and husband Wayne. He was preceded in death by his stepfather Ralph Gery and brother Richard Emert.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am Friday November 18th, 2022 at St. Mary’s Church, 122 Union St. Catasauqua. His viewings will be from 6-8pm Thursday, November 17th at Brubaker Funeral Home, Inc. 234 Walnut St. Catasauqua, 18032 and again from 9-10am Friday at the church.
