Obituary for Herbert D. Brubaker
Herbert D. Brubaker, 91, formerly of Altoona died peacefully January 12, 2012 in Valley View Retirement Community, Belleville, Pa. Born January 24, 1920, in Altoona, PA, he was the son of the late David C. and Cora B. (Weyandt) Brubaker. He was united in marriage on May 10, 1941 to Marie I (Andrews) Brubaker, who preceded him in death on August 30, 2003. Surviving are two sons, John H. Brubaker and wife Heide of Catasauqua, PA and Gary S. Brubaker and wife Jane of State College, PA, four grandchildren, Julia (Brubaker) Kielmeyer, J. Andrew Brubaker and wife Kim, John W. Brubaker and wife Laura and Cathi Jo Brubaker, eight great-grandchildren, Brendon, Madison, Ella, Georgia, Lucy, Jack, Hunter and Nicholas. Herb was preceded in death by his wife Marie, his youngest son, Stephen L. Brubaker on February 9, 2003, and three sisters, Maude V. Shuss, Mildred E. Ashburn, and Gladys J. Tipton. Herb operated steam and diesel locomotives as a Fireman and Engineer for Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central, Conrail and Amtrak Railroads until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of the Watts Memorial United Methodist Church in Belleville, a former member of the Broad Avenue Methodist Church in Altoona, and was raised in the First Church of the Brethren in Altoona. He was a 50 year life member of the Altoona Masonic Lodge and a life member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. Herb served with the United States Marine Corps in World War II as a crew chief on B-25s in the Philippines and Hawaii until honorably discharged in 1946. He proudly contributed regularly to many veterans organizations, funds and memorials. Herb and Marie loved and are loved by family and friends. After retirement they enjoyed 20 years of traveling the country making more friends, square dancing, sightseeing and marveling at this life God gave us all. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am Tuesday January 17, 2012 at the Valley View Haven Chapel 4702 E. Main Street Belleville, Pa. 17004 with Rev. Galen Sharp officiating. Call 10:00am until 11:00am in the Valley View Chapel. Friends and relatives are welcome to attend his burial at graveside in Alto-Reste Park 109 Alto Reste Park Altoona, PA. 16601 at approximately 2:00PM. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in his name payable to: Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 689, Altoona, PA 16603. Arrangements are under the care of Henderson Funeral Home, 3813 West Main St., Belleville, PA 17004.
