Obituary for Howard "Bench" William Hartman
Howard “Bench” William Hartman, 89 years, of Whitehall, died Saturday June 8th, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospice in Bethlehem. He was the husband of the late Marjorie Mae (Johns) Hartman. Born in Hokendauqua, he was a son of the late Howard and Amy (Dech) Hartman. Howard was member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hokendauqua where he served as a trustee. “Bench” was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., the Hokendauqua American Legion Post #739 and the Hokendauqua Fire Co. He worked for himself for many years in construction and as a brick layer before retiring after many years of employment with Lehigh Structural Steel. Howard was a WWII Army veteran serving with the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagles”, Company C, 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment having jumped into the Normandy coast behind Utah Beach on D-Day 1944 and later in Holland and Bastogne. He was the recipient of 2 Purple Hearts, 2 Bronze Stars and a Silver Star. Surviving is his son Brian husband of Debbie, brother Edmund Hartman seven grandchildren Jennifer, Jessica, Janine, Nathaniel, Sara, Beth, Michele and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Clark “Willy”, sisters Ruth, Elizabeth, Mary, Esther and brother Frank. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Wednesday June 12 at the Brubaker Funeral Home, Inc. 234 Walnut Street Catasauqua. His viewing will be in the funeral home on Wednesday from 10:00am until 11:00am. Memorial contributions may be given in his name payable to the First Presbyterian Church of Hokendauqua 3005 S. Front Street Whitehall, Pa. 18052.
