Obituary for Jack D. Denny

Jack D. Denny, 87, of Boynton Beach, Florida, formerly of Allentown, died Friday June 2, 2023 after a brief illness. He was at home with his children by his side. Jack was the husband of the late Marian (Smith) Denny and celebrated 59 years of marriage before her passing in 2019. Born in McDonald, PA he was a son of the late Mark and Evelyn (Hagerman) Denny.

Jack honorably served his country as a paratrooper in the Army 11th Airborne Division. He received his bachelors and masters degrees from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Jack dedicated his life to education and retired from William Allen High School after teaching Chemistry for over 38 years. Above all, Jack’s greatest joy was his family. He was a loyal, fun-loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Jack was the strong, silent type - not unlike the heroes in his beloved cowboy westerns. Though short on words, his family never doubted for a minute how much they were loved.

He was a man of action. Jack showed up unannounced for friends and family, toolbox in hand, when the tree fell on the house, or the garage door crashed down, or the tent flooded on the camping trip.

He stayed up with his young children, comforting them after a bad dream, or sitting on the bunk bed captivating them with his creative, home-spun stories, complete with character voices.

He showed up at their basketball tournaments, karate and gymnastic meets, and baseball games. He invented his own games and worked puzzles for hours with his beloved grandson. He welcomed his son-in-law, Tim, and daughter-in-law, Anne, into the family and loved them as if they were his own.

There was nothing Jack couldn’t fix or jerry-rig with copious amounts of zip ties, gorilla glue and duct tape. He taught us all what it means to be truly brave. And how to navigate an unfairly difficult road- like losing your ability to walk and move about the world - not with complaint, but with quiet strength, and dignity, and grace.

We will miss his whip-smart wit and sense of humor, his spirit of adventure, his determination, grit, and resolve. The example he set while he lived is alive in all who knew and loved him.

Surviving are his children, sons John C. Denny and his wife Anne, and Steven M. Denny; daughter Susan J. Hall and her husband Tim, grandson Ryan Jack Denny; sisters Jean and Janice, nieces and nephews, and many beloved friends.
