Obituary for Jean C. Hale

On Thanksgiving morning Jean C. Hale, 92, of Coplay, died peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late James J. Hale, Sr. who passed in 1984. She was born in Pottsville; to the late Charles E. and Minnie M. (Davis) Knoblauch. She was preceded in death by her sister’s Leona (Hope) Evans, Elizabeth Hawryluk, her son-in-law Victor E. Bortz and great grandson Cole Hale.


Jean was a devout Catholic and member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Coplay for many years. She held multiple clerical positions with a variety of businesses and took a great deal of pride in her work, before devoting herself to caring for her family and home.


She enjoyed gardening, raising chickens and camping trips with her family up and down the east coast. As an avid cyclist she had wonderful adventures touring with her friends. Some of her most cherished memories were her trips to Alaska and Mexico with her brother Butch and trips to Disney World with her family. She loved reading, holiday scrabble throwdowns, knitting, praying the rosary and watching classic movies with her family; “Gone with the Wind”, any western with gunfights were some of her favorites. Jean enjoyed her time with her dear friends at the West Catty Playground. Spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her a lot of joy.


Surviving is her brother Charles H. Knoblauch and his wife Jann, her daughters Bonnie J. Arner and husband David; Beverly A. Garger and partner James Long; Patricia M. Bortz and partner Dr. Jack Manzella; sons James J. Hale, Jr. and wife Judy; William H. Hale and wife Roxanne with whom she resided; grandchildren Amber Sugarbaker and husband Dr. Peter Sugarbaker; Marshall Garger and wife Alicia; Aaron Bortz and fiancé Maria Halkias; Alianna Kibler and husband Barry; Kaitlyn Hale; Ethan Arner; Rachel Arner; Tyler Roth; Jessica Gattermeyer and husband Tyler; Kayla Chamberlain and husband Christopher; Robert Roth; 15 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.


A calling period will be held from 9:30-10:30am Tuesday, November28, 2023, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 4 S. 5th Street, Coplay, 18037. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am at the church. Interment to follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to St. Joseph’s Indian School, P.O. Box 100, Chamberlain, SD, 57325. Brubaker Funeral Home, Inc. in Coplay is honored to handle the arrangements.
