Obituary for John J. "Sonny" Unger, Jr.
John J. “Sonny” Unger, Jr., 85, of Whitehall, passed away on March 20, 2021, at Whitehall Manor Nursing Home. He was the beloved husband of the late Bernadine A. (Hodge) Unger for 61 years before her passing in June of 2015. Born in Whitehall, he was the son of the late John and Bertha (Deutsch) Unger.
Sonny was a faithful member of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Coplay. He worked at Bethlehem Steel for 43 years as a molder in the Iron Foundry. Sonny was a gun enthusiast who was a member at various gun clubs and a lifelong member of the NRA. He enjoyed building with his hands and completed various construction projects throughout his life.
He is survived by daughter, Cheryl wife of Richard Lychak of Whitehall; sons, John and wife Donna of Slatington, Michael and wife Erika of Slatington; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and sister, Sandra, wife of Roland Reinert of Whitehall. He was predeceased by brother, Robert Unger.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on March 24, 2021, at St. Peter’s R.C.C., 4 S. 5th St., Coplay, PA, 18037. A viewing will be held from 10-10:30 AM in the church. Burial will follow in parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Church at the above address. Brubaker Funeral Home, Inc., is entrusted with arrangements.
