Obituaries

Leon J. Abate, 91, died on Tuesday, March 5, 2025, at Lehigh Valley Hospital – Muhlenberg. Born in Larksville, PA., he was the son of Leo and Helen (Veshinsky) Abate.
He was the loving husband of Joanne R. (Marfisi) Abate, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage last July 16th. He served honorably in the US Army during the Korean War.
He was a long-time member of St. Peter’s R.C. Church in Coplay. He was a tool and dye maker for the former Western Company retiring from Lucent after 33 years of employment.
He was a member of the American Legion Hokendaqua Jones-Quigg Post 739. Leon loved woodworking. He enjoyed making toys, clocks, and furniture. He was very handy and enthusiastic about his work. He was a diehard Eagles fan and overjoyed when they won the Superbowl! He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife Joanne, son John L. Abate and Cheryl Orth, sisters, Dorothy Krawetz, Lorraine Yeninisa, and Anthony, granddaughter Lauryn Orth, great grandchildren, Averyanna Orth, Cash Rotz and Brooklynn Golomb, dogs Cali, Maggie, and Chance. He was predeceased by sister Theresa Abate.
There will be a mass of Christian burial on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at St. Peter’s R.C. Church 4 S. 5h St., Coplay, PA. from 10-11 a.m. Interment to immediately follow at the church cemetery in Hokendauqua.
