Obituary for Leona A. Keppel

Leona A. Keppel, 87, of Coplay, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at St. Luke’s Hospice House surrounded by her family. She was the loving wife of the late Frank Keppel with whom she shared 44 years of marriage before his passing in August of 2004. Born in Whitehall, she was the daughter of the late John and Anna (Berdy) Molchany.


Leona was a 1953 graduate of Whitehall High School and worked at Werley Daycare for over ten years. Leona was a woman of strong faith and a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Coplay. She enjoyed traveling, especially on her many trips to California to visit her family. Leona enjoyed spending time reading and listening to music and attending music events. Leona was a sweet, kind and loving person who was known for her quiet strength. Above all, she loved and adored her family with all her heart. Leona especially valued time spent with her grandchildren. She was a devoted mother and a loving grandmother, sister, and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.


She will be lovingly remembered by her seven children, David Keppel of Allentown, Anne Denny and husband John of Bethlehem, Doreen Polaha and husband Michael of Newport Beach, CA, Michelle Heaney and husband Gene of Bethlehem, Philip Keppel and wife Jill of Burbank, CA, Jennifer Lucas and husband Chris of Bellefonte and Kevin Keppel and wife Shannon of Coplay; thirteen grandchildren, Ryan Denny, Victoria and Rebecca Polaha, Stephen, Tyler, and Evan Heaney, Brandon Lawton, Taylor and Owen Keppel, Marissa and Jamison Lucas, and Lilah and Emmy Keppel. She is also survived by brother, John Molchany and wife Mary of Menomonee Falls, WI, brother-in-law, George Kurtz of Northampton, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and beloved husband, Frank, she was predeceased by her brother John Jr., stepmother, Susan (Kuchera) Molchany and sister Barbara Kurtz.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, at St. Peter’s RCC, 4 S. 5th St., Coplay, PA 18037. A visitation will be held from 12:15-1:00 PM in the church. A burial will follow at parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Leona’s memory to the church at the above address.
