Obituary for Lucy Whitford Sonne
Lucy Whitford Sonne, 85, beloved mother of five, grandmother of four, and great-grandmother of three, died peacefully at St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem on Tuesday, August 31, 2010. Born in Titusville, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Harold Elsworth and Elizabeth Johnstone Whitford. She was a graduate of Philadelphia General Hospital (PGH) Nursing School and served as an RN at PGH, Titusville Hospital, and the Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II. She later worked in Sales, Management, and Personnel at Hess’s Department Store. Lucy was a woman of enormous grace, warmth, and wisdom and will be deeply missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing her. She is survived by four children, Lis Sonne Hoveland and her husband James Hoveland of Harleysville, PA; Eric Steven Sonne and his wife Frances Gravish Sonne of Catasauqua, PA; Jane Sonne of Bethlehem, PA; Patricia Sonne of Bethlehem, PA; four grandchildren, Christian and his wife Shubha, Jonathan and his wife Heather, Erica and her husband Jason, and Ian; and two great-grandchildren Finn and James. She was predeceased by a daughter Karen Sonne and great-granddaughter Elisabeth. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations in Lucy’s name can be sent to the Salvation Army of Allentown, 144 N. 8th Street, Allentown, PA 18105 or the Worldwide Office of The Nature Conservancy, 4245 North Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203-1606. The Brubaker Funeral Home, Inc., 234 Walnut Street, Catasauqua, PA will be entrusted with the arrangements.
