Obituary for Mary Hannah Kowaleski
Mary Hannah Kowaleski, “Mrs. Kay”, 93 years of Catasauqua, died Monday December 3rd, 2012 at Sacred Heart Assisted Living in Center Valley. She was the wife of the late Leo E. Kowaleski. Born in Summit Hill, PA she was the daughter of the late Fred and Marie (McLean) Evans. Hannah was a member of St. Mary’s Church of the Annunciation B.V.M. in Catasauqua. She was a graduate of East Stroudsburg State College and Penn State College. She earned her Master’s in Education in Counseling from Lehigh University. Hannah taught Health, Phys. Ed. And English for 5 years in Coaldale High School and a half a year in the Fountain Hill High School and Elementary grades. Within the Catasauqua Area School District, Hannah taught Health and Phys. Ed. in Jr. & Sr. High School for 12 years and worked in the guidance office for 15 years retiring in 1982. Hannah also taught Health, Phys. Ed. & English at Montrose School in Reisteratown, MD during the summers of 1941, ’42, ’45, ’47, & ’55. Hannah was the Catasauqua Girls Basketball coach for 13 years. She also coached cheerleading and majorettes for Catasauqua. During WWII she taught the standard and advanced courses in first aid in Summit Hill and Coaldale, PA Hannah was a life member of the PSEA-R and the Local PSEA-R Group. She was a member of AARP, the American Legion Auxiliary of Summit Hill, St. Andrew’s Young Heart Club and the Fullerton Senior Citizens group. After retiring from Catasauqua, she loved to travel. Surviving are her sons Matthew Kowaleski and wife Victoria and Daniel Kowaleski and wife Nancy; sisters Marie O’Donnell & Elvira Baroletti; granddaughters Heather Reed and Angela Kowaleski; great grandchildren Evan, Blake and Lucas Reed. She was preceded in death by her son Leo and brothers Daniel, Thomas, Edward, Robert & Fred Evans. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am Thursday December 6th, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 122 Union St. Catasauqua, 18032. Call from 9-10 at the church. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Catasauqua High School Scholarship Fund c/o the Brubaker Funeral Home, Inc. 234 Walnut St. Catasauqua, 18032.
