Obituary for Merrill J. Roberts
Merrill J. Roberts, 84, a long time resident of N. Catasauqua, died Wednesday July 1, 2009 in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg, with his loving wife Ruth (Snoddy) Roberts by his side. Born in Sacred Heart Hospital, Allentown, he was the son of the late William and Margaret (Saul) Roberts After losing his father at an early age, he attended Girard College in Philadelphia from 1934-1943. Shortly thereafter, he served in World War II as a Sergeant assigned to Battery A 580th Field Artillery Battalion from 1944-1946. He was deployed in both France and Germany during the war. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star. After the war he held various engineering positions and ultimately came to work for the former Everson Electric, retiring from there in 1989. During this time his passion was working on the design and fabrication of high energy magnets critical to the operation of the world’s most powerful particle accelerators, including the ones in use at both CERN in Switzerland and FERMI lab outside of Chicago, IL. He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Howertown. Merrill is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Ruth (Snoddy); his daughter Dawn and her husband Michael; his sons Stephen and his wife Pam; Thomas and his wife Sandie and John and his wife Alicia; his brother Russel; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son David. Funeral services will be held at 11am Monday July 6th, 2009 at the Brubaker Funeral Home, Inc., 234 Walnut St. Catasauqua, PA 18032. Call from 10-11am at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his name to the American Lung Association, 2121 City Line Road, Bethlehem, PA 18017.
