Obituary for Richard Shaw Luse
Richard (Dick) Shaw Luse passed away peacefully in his home on December 2, 2017 after a courageous and heroic battle of 3+ years with glioblastoma multiforme. His final moments were spent enveloped by the love and embrace of his family; which he would be the first to admit is his greatest legacy.
Born to Andrew (Phil) and Nancy Dalrymple Luse of Florham Park, NJ on April 10, 1947, Dick spent his formative years attending Hanover Park HS (‘65), Lehigh University (’69) and Duquesne Law School (’74) and marrying his kindergarten sweetheart and life-long crush, Penny Kern (’69). After pursuing a law career in Pittsburgh for almost a decade, he decided to leave law behind in order to begin creating a life more suitable to fatherhood, in Bethlehem, PA.
Once in Bethlehem, he put his entrepreneurial skills to work and created Datacap Inc., a small company that helped state and local governments with tax obligations. When that candle dimmed, he found himself back in the world of law. He purchased a small law firm and began the Law Office of Reybitz and Luse, an estate law practice he ran up until his passing.
As a young adult and father of three, when he was not selflessly and enthusiastically supporting his sons at soccer pitches, baseball diamonds, swimming pools, golf courses, concert venues and parade routes all over the mid-Atlantic, Dick devoted significant time and energy to his faith and beloved church, First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem. There he served as an elder, trustee, member of multiple bible study groups and a leader of numerous committees entrusted with the direction and path of the church’s past, present and future.
In addition to the church, Dick was dedicated and steadfast in leadership and volunteering as the president of the Greater Bethlehem Soccer League, the Commissioner of Northeast Little League, a member of the Jaycees of Bethlehem, a Pennsylvania Mason and a board member with Victory House of Lehigh Valley.
Dick was an avid pursuer of history; a professional at heart but amateur in skill on the golf course; a lover of big band and marching band music; a proud member of the Lehigh-Lafayette 50 Game Club; a fanatic of boats and anything nautical; and extremely at peace whenever he neared open water.
He will be sorely missed by wife: Penny; sons: Dave, Matt and Brian; daughters-in-law: Kerry, Kara and Ali; grandchildren: Andrew, Ellie, Lorelei, Beau and one on the way; and sister: Ann Smith.
A memorial service for Dick will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem on December 16, 2017 at 1pm.
In lieu of flowers, Dick requested that donations be made to The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University in his memory.
