Obituary for Robert L. Hewitt
Robert L. Hewitt, Sr., 83, of Allentown, died Tuesday, July 21, 2009 in the Inpatient Hospice Unit at Lehigh Valley Hospital. Bob was married to Shirley (Matthews) Hewitt for 59 years. Born in Scranton, PA, Bob was the son of the late George and Pauline (Flanigan) Hewitt. He graduated from Scranton Central High School in 1943. Bob entered the Navy V-12 program at Franklin and Marshall College. Commissioned an ensign from the Columbia University Mid-Shipman School, he served aboard the U.S.S. Nassau during World War II. Following the war, he graduated from Penn State University with a degree in industrial engineering. He joined Bell Telephone in 1948 as a student engineer in Scranton. Recalled to active duty during the Korean War, Bob served in Pusan as a commanding officer in communications and with the Atlantic Fleet in Norfolk, Va. Upon returning from Korea, he worked in various capacities with Bell Telephone throughout Pennsylvania. In 1960, he came to Allentown as manager of Bell Telephone’s Lehigh District, a position he held for 23 years. After 36 years with Bell Telephone, Bob retired and he and Shirley moved to their beloved Lake Harmony. There he entertained family and friends with fishing and sailing excursions, horse shoe, ring toss and bocce tournaments and countless bonfires and clam bakes. Bob was an active member of his community. His involvement included: President, Allentown Rotary Club; President of the Board of Associates, Muhlenberg College; Chairman of the Board of Directors, WLVT-TV Channel 39; Executive Committee, Industrial Development Corporation of Lehigh County; Board of Governors, Allentown-Lehigh County Chamber of Commerce; Treasurer, Lake Harmony Association; and Trustee, Lake Harmony Ambulance and Rescue Squad. An avid Penn State fan, Bob liked to golf, travel, work in the yard, and collect and refinish antiques. He was a loving husband, devoted father and doting grandfather and great-grandfather. Survivors: wife, Shirley; sister, Jane Selbie of Green Valley, AZ; daughter, Susan J. Hoffman and her husband Wayne, of Macungie; son, Robert L. Hewitt, Jr. and his wife Karen, of Freehold, NJ; granddaughters, Kristen Sewards and her husband Milo, of Wyncote, PA, and Lisa Walkiewicz and her husband Michael, of Bethlehem; grandsons, Christopher and Tyler Hewitt, of Freehold, NJ; great-granddaughters, Payton, Samantha, and Dylan. Services: Memorial, 1:00 pm, Monday, July 27 at Asbury United Methodist Church, 1533 Springhouse Road, Allentown. Call from 12:00-1:00 pm in the Church parlor prior to the service.
