Obituaries
Robert L. Porvaznik, 93, of Whitehall passed away September 3, 2024, and went home to the Lord to be with his beloved wife Clare who died in August of 2012 after 55 years of marriage.
Born in Allentown, he was the son of the late Dr. Joseph and Florence (Lanshe) Porvaznik. He graduated from high school at Don Bosco Prep, Ramsey, NJ, in 1948. He was a talented basketball player in his youth. While a junior at the school he personally met NY Yankee legend Babe Ruth.
Bob then graduated from Belmont Abbey Jr. College, Belmont, N.C. in 1950 and Niagara University, N.Y. in 1952. After graduating from college, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in the Korean War and became a Staff Sergeant and Tank Commander with the 25th Infantry Division where he received two Bronze Battle Stars on his Korean War service medal. After his military service he continued with the United States Merchant Marine and worked and sailed on Oil Tankers. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling with his wife.
He retired from West Chemical Products in 1997as Eastern Regional Sales Manager. He was a member of St. Peter’s R.C. Church of Coplay, PA. Former CYO Director and 7th and 8th grade Boys Basketball Coach for 11 years. He was active in a variety of veteran’s organizations including the Hokendauqua American Legion Post 739.
Survivors: Daughter Laura wife of Ken Schoenberger, son Robert J. and wife Tami, brother Phillip, five grandchildren, Karla wife of Ricky Smith, Katie Cortney, Kyle Porvaznik and wife Gina, Clint and companion Kayla and five great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister Joanne Gallagher.
There will be a calling period on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, from 9-10 a.m. at St. Peter’s R.C. Church, 4 S. 5th Street, Coplay, PA. 18037. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at the church cemetery.
