Obituary for Robert S. Zakos, Sr.
Mr. Robert Stephen Zakos, 74, of Catasauqua, Pa., passed on January 10, 2017. He was known to many as “Buck” and “Bucky.” Born on June 4, 1942 in Allentown, Pa., he was the son of the late Stephen and Mary (Novak) Zakos of N. 4th St. in Allentown. Robert was a 1960 graduate of Louis E. Dieruff High School in Allentown. He was also a 1961 graduate of the former Allentown Business School. Robert was husband to Beverly A. (Scott) for 43 years.

Robert had worked as a warehouse supervisor at Vanguard Plastics Mfg. in Upper Macungie Twsp., Pa. and retired from there in 1997. He was also a former employee of Western Union in Allentown from 1968–86, and of A-Treat Beverage Co. in Allentown from 1963–68.

In his younger days, Robert was an avid basketball player and played on many teams in many recreational leagues. He was a member of the 1960s Winter’s Café basketball team that had a seven-year, 135-game win streak in the Allentown Rec Class A League. Robert was also a longtime umpire for many local area amateur baseball and softball leagues throughout the Lehigh Valley over the past forty-five years; including the Allentown Rec League, American Legion Baseball, Blue Mountain League, Lehigh Valley Slo-pitch, and many others.

Robert was a Vietnam Veteran. He served in the U.S. Army from 1964–66 in the Field Artillery. He was a Specialist E-4, Fire Direction Controller for Battery A of the 6th Battalion, 27th Artillery Regiment. He was a recipient of a Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze battle stars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation.

Robert was a lifelong member of the Suburban North Family YMCA in Catasauqua, and previously the Allentown YMCA. He was also a member of the Catasauqua American Legion Post 215, as well as a member of AMVETS and the Vietnam Veterans of America. Robert was also a member of the Catasauqua Club and the Catasauqua East End Fire Co. Social Club. He had been a past member of the former Allentown Italian Club and the former Allentown Ukrainian (Ukes) Club.

Robert was a congregant of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Catasauqua and was a past congregant of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Allentown.

Survivors: Wife, Beverly A., of Catasauqua; son, Robert S. Jr., husband to Lynn M., of Bethlehem, Pa. Robert was predeceased by his sister, Rosemary A., late wife to James D. Kurtz of Whitehall, Pa.

Funeral services will be held at 11am Saturday January 14th, 2017 St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 417 Howertown Road, Catasauqua, Pa. 18032. His viewing will be held from 10-11am on Saturday at the church. Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Memorial Park, Allentown. The Brubaker Funeral Home, Inc. of Catasauqua is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name, payable to the American Heart Association 968 Postal Road Suite 110 Allentown, Pa. 18109 or the American Cancer Society 3893 Adler Place Suite 170 Bethlehem, Pa. 18017.
