Ruth E. Shafer of Whitehall, 97, passed away peacefully Sunday, September 18, 2022. She had been a resident of Promedica South, in Bethlehem. Ruth was the wife of the late Lamar K. Shafer. Born in Coplay, she was the daughter of the late Sherwood B. and Myrtle E. (Knerr) Balliet.
Ruth graduated from Coplay High School, and was a member of Coplay UCC Church. Her work life included office administration, waitressing and manufacturing. An avid reader, she also enjoyed bingo, music, travel, long drives with family and sharing her yarn crafts with others.
Though Ruth raised her family in Whitehall, she always spoke fondly about her childhood home in Coplay. During her life she often shared stories of experiences growing up in the family’s Coplay home, as well as stories about her visits to the family farm out in the country. She recognized the importance of education, and often advised her children to educate themselves well to be prepared for life ahead. This advice was greatly appreciated.
Ruth is survived by daughter Kathleen Chandler of Wellsboro, PA, son Jeffrey Shafer and wife Joan of Whitehall, and son Curtis Shafer and wife Kathleen of Bethlehem; Six grandchildren; Five great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by brothers Sherwood, Carl, and Bruce Balliet as well as sisters Francine Reinert and Mary Jane Michael.
Family members will gather privately for a graveside service at the Coplay Cemetery on N. Ninth St. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Ruth’s name to the Dementia Society of America. Arrangements are entrusted to Brubaker Funeral Home of Coplay.
