Obituary for Samuel A. Crouthamel
Samuel Crouthamel passed away peacefully at the age of 73 on Sunday January 24 2021 at Cedar Crest Hospital. He was the widow of Faith Crouthamel having been married for over 38 years. Born in Allentown, Sam was the son of the late Loretta Cook and Samuel Crouthamel. He graduated from Whitehall High School in 1965 followed by service to his country in the U.S. Marines from 1967 to 1969 including a tour of duty in Vietnam as an armored personnel carrier mechanic. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Catasauqua and later St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Northampton.
After serving his country, Sam returned to Pennsylvania to continue working as a mechanic at several Lehigh Valley businesses. In 1982, he ventured out on his own opening Sac’s Citgo Automotive Services on Chestnut St. in Coplay. After closing the station, Sam took up driving tractor-trailers and eventually became a driving instructor for the state of Pennsylvania at Lehigh County Community College. Sam was an avid outdoorsman and long-time member of the Ranger Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed hunting and fishing including archery. Deer season and opening day were great days as well as numerous trips to Canada for walleye fishing. To Sam’s delight, every grandchild’s first fish was caught with Pop-Pop.
He will be dearly missed by his sons, David Dougherty and wife Valerie of Pittsburgh, Scott Dougherty and wife Lynn of Omaha; sister Mary Genovese and husband Jim of Northampton; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and many friends.
Services: A private service will be held on Friday January 29th at 9:30 at Brubaker Funeral Home of Coplay followed by graveside military honors at Cedar Hill Memorial at 11:00 that will be open to all. A live stream of the private service will be broadcasted on Friday at 9:30 AM and can be watched live through Brubaker Funeral Home's Facebook Page.
Contributions: In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Coplay Recreation & Welfare Association Food Bank at 98 South 4th St, Coplay, PA 18037 or the Lehigh Valley Military Affairs Council at Lehigh Valley Military Affairs Council at P.O. Box 22522, Lehigh Valley, PA 18002-2522.
