Obituary for Stephen Chromiak
On Monday April 25th, Stephen Chromiak of North Catasauqua passed away, surrounded by his family. He was 101 on January 31st. Stephen was the youngest and last surviving of eight siblings, and he was the son of George and Yustina Chromiak.
He graduated from Catasauqua High School in 1938. He worked as a mechanic at the Bethlehem Steel for twenty-four years. The Chromiak siblings were a tight knit family, and he and his brothers built five family homes including his own home in the 1950’s. In his younger years, Steve loved to dance and listen to big band groups in the area. He bowled in the Thursday night Coplay Saengerbund bowling league for over forty years.
However, Steve’s lifelong passion was golf. He started playing golf at the Old Lehigh Country Club in 1936, where he caddied, took care of the driving range, and perfected his golf swing. His golf talent grew, and he turned professional in 1958, and acquired his Professional Golfers Association (PGA) card in 1965. In 1969, he became pro-manager of Willow Brook Golf Course. While at Willow Brook, he instructed hundreds of people in golf, sold golf equipment, ran yearly club tournaments, held several night golf charity benefits, and oversaw the suburban North YMCA Miller-Danko Golf Tournament. He had four hole-in-ones during his career, one for each of his daughters, he often said. He retired from Willow Brook in 1995.
During his retirement years, he spent most of his time maintaining the family farm, North Oaks, in Danielsville, and traveled. He continued to play golf until he was ninety and mowed his lawn until he was ninety-eight.
He leaves behind his wife Sally of sixty-seven years, and four daughters, Gail Carpency, Lynn Burkit and husband Mark, Janice Frantz and husband Michael, all of Danielsville, and Karen Hendricks of Northampton. He also had nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Services will be held Friday, April 29th, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Catasauqua at 11am. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 604 Fourth St. Catasauqua, PA 18032 or The First Tee Lehigh Valley, 6034 Hamilton Blvd. #124 Allentown, PA 18106. Brubaker Funeral Home, Inc. of Catasauqua is entrusted with the arrangements.
