Obituaries
Born on November 26, 1917 in Hellertown to the late Mary Tutko and Stefan Slahta, he was a child of the Great Depression, who served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935-1936. In 1936, he was hired by the Bethlehem Steel. He never worked anywhere else, and when he retired 43 ½ years later, he was a supervisor in the Ingot Mold Foundry.
Strong-willed and self-reliant, he was a self-made man who proudly did everything himself, including building the house in which he and his late wife Mary raised their two children.
Growing up in hard times taught him many things, and throughout his life he was always willing to share what he had had to learn the hard way. Offering his help to others was something that was just a part of who he was.
After he retired in 1980, he remained active and made many friends of all ages at golf courses, the bowling alley and the corner sports bar. He was a member of the former Saint Andrews Church; now Saint John Fisher of N. Catasauqua for more than 70 years and a 50+ year member of the Jednota Lodge.
Two of his nine siblings survive him: Mary Steager and Michael Slahta, both of Hellertown. His living legacy is his daughter Susan, son Tom, daughter-in-law Janis, and grandson Matthew, of whom he was most proud.
Funeral services will be 11:00am Tuesday October 13 in St. John Fisher Catholic Church 1229 Third Street N. Catasauqua, Pa. 18032. His viewing will be 7:00pm until 8:30pm Monday October 12 and 9:30am until 10:30am Tuesday October 13 in the Brubaker Funeral Home, Inc. 234 Walnut Street Catasauqua, Pa. 18032.
As his was a life that was long and well-lived, the family requests that in lieu of flowers and condolences, those who knew him raise a glass in celebration of his life, share their memories, and, if able, make a donation in his name to the Catasauqua Food Bank in care of Brubaker Funeral Home, Inc.
