Obituary for Sterling N. "Duffy" Bowen
Sterling N. “Duffy” Bowen, 91, formerly of Catasauqua, passed away Saturday August 25th, 2012 at Lehigh Valley Hospital – Muhlenberg in Bethlehem. He was the husband of Gladys (Spangler) Bowen and they would have celebrated 70 years together this year. He and his wife lived at Sacred Heart at the Creek in Northampton since 2002. Born on July 30, 1921 in North Catasauqua, he was the son of the late Robert and Mabel (Troxell) Bowen. Sterling graduated from Catasauqua High School in 1939. He worked for PP&L for 37 years, mainly in Public Relations where he was instrumental in planning various community events and also the company annual picnic. Sterling was co-owner of the Catasauqua Dispatch Printery for several years. Active in his community, he was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Catasauqua, where he served on the church council and was a choir member. He was a former president of the Catasauqua Public Library and was instrumental in starting the Catasauqua North YMCA. He delivered Meals-On-Wheels for 20 years. He was a Captain in the US Army during WWII where he served in the European Theater of Operations. After the war he continued to serve in the PA National Guard for 28 years retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He also served many years as planning coordinator for the International Aviation Snow Symposium, which was sponsored by LVI Airport and held annually in Allentown. He also served as chairman of the organizing committee for the Allentown Bicentennial Parade held in 1976. Sterling was an avid golfer who had 3 holes-in-one in his career. Surviving with his wife are his children, daughter Gail Gist of Whitehall; son Gary D. Bowen and wife Nancy of Bethlehem; brother Curtis; grandchildren Janet, Carol, Gary, Billy, Audrey and Steven; great grandchildren Aidan, Madison, Mason, and Logan; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers Howard, William, Sherwood and Lester. Funeral services will be held at 12:30pm Thursday August 30th, 2012 at the Brubaker Funeral Home, Inc. 234 Walnut St. Catasauqua, 18032. His calling period will be from 11:30am-12:30pm at the funeral home. Interment to follow with military honors by Catasauqua American Legion Post #215 at Cedar Hill Memorial Park in Allentown. Contributions may be made in his name payable to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 417 Howertown Road, Catasauqua, 18032.
