Obituary for Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Ziegler

Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Ziegler, 96 of Hardeeville, SC passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2023. Formerly of Allentown, PA and born in Coplay, PA, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Johanna (Hammerl) Nicholas. She was the wife of the late James E. Ziegler.

Elizabeth was a homemaker most of her life and had a variety of jobs throughout her life including babysitting, caregiving, house and business cleaning, cigar factory and Durkeey Spice Factory. he was a former member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Allentown, PA.

Elizabeth was the baby of the family coming along approximately 17 years after her sister, who had caregiving duties, because her parents were running a business. Her sister made sure she had everything she needed and more. Elizabeth said, as a child she was lonely because everyone else in the family was working in the business, she also said she had the best of everything while she was growing up and she was treated like a little princess. Her parents were immigrants from Austria who worked very hard to make a life in the USA. Her father built their large home with a business which was attached to their home which included a slaughterhouse, full butcher shop, and grocery store which Elizabeth used as her playground. During the depression, when neighbors in Coplay had very little money or much food to eat, the store fed many in Coplay on IOU (that most did not pay back!).

• Elizabeth was an artist and loved to paint and create art. She loved making beautiful realistic hand folded flowers out of anything she could mold!

• She was extremely intelligent and enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing Scrabble, and answering most questions on Jeopardy. Her mind stayed that way until her 90's!

• She was an amazing baker, making beautiful birthday cakes and pastries from handed down family recipes. Everything she made was artistic and delicious!

• She loved to play the piano and listen to piano and other music.

• She loved flowers and gardening and feeding the birds and other animals that surrounded her yard.

• She loved all animals, especially dogs and birds.

• She loved taking care of her grandchildren, and they loved her!

• She loved her family and wanted them around her as much as possible!

• She could hold a conversation with most everyone she met, and they would somehow tell her their whole life history before they parted.

• She enjoyed tea and a game of cards with her neighborhood friends where she lived for over 60 years.

• She was very fashionable and her fashion sense, even at the age of 90 was amazing! She loved fine clothing, shoes, and accessories. Back in the day all her outfits had to match including hat, dress, shoes, and purse. While living in Allentown, she took the bus weekly to downtown, where she loved to shop at Hess's, Zollingers, Layes, Fars, and the Childrens Shop where she dressed all her kids with the best clothes and shoes. She never got her driver's license but got wherever she needed to go by either bus, walking, or a ride.

• She loved anything that sparkled, especially crystal, jewelry, and lamps, etc.

• She was feisty and strong-willed and certainly held her own throughout her life, which took many twists and turns.

• She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. And will be dearly missed.

• She was always there to listen and give comfort. Her daughter Cindy said "I will miss our chats on the phone and hearing your voice. I love you dearly mom. Rest in peace mom".

She is lovingly remembered and survived by: Children: Judith (Judy) Potter and her partner Jim Ashby, Cynthia (Cindy) and her husband Tucker Chrismer, Lisa and her husband Scott Baker, James (Jamie) E.
