Obituary for Mildred Keeler Landis
Mildred K. Landis, age 105 passed away on March 27, 2013. Born in Philadelphia she was the only child of the late Clarence and Emma Keeler, the wife of Harry C. Landis (deceased in 1996), the mother of John K. Landis, mother-in-law of Barbara Schulman, grandmother of Alison Landis Stone and Steve Landis. Mildred was born in 1907 and grew up in the Logan area of North Philadelphia and graduated in 1930 with a degree in English from Wilson College, a small liberal arts college in Chambersburg, Pa. She worked for five years at J.B. Lippincott Publishers on Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia, where she wrote the jacket flap synopsis for many novels. She married Harry in 1935 and bore her only child John, in 1943. During WWII, although Harry was ineligible for military service, he was an air raid warden for his block in the West Oak Lane neighborhood of Philadelphia. Soon after the war ended Mildred and Harry moved to Drexel Hill In suburban Philadelphia and in 1956 they moved to Ardmore in the western suburbs. After Harry’s retirement in 1976, Mildred and Harry moved to Damariscotta, Maine, where they bought yet another house and enjoyed eleven years on the Maine coast. They moved back to Pennsylvania in 1987 and lived in Allentown until Harry’s health concerns encouraged them to move into Country Meadows of Bethlehem. After Harry’s death, the new Allentown campus of Country Meadows was built, and Mildred moved to the apartment she lived in until her death. A celebration of life service to be held at County Meadows of Allentown will be announced at a later date. The Brubaker Funeral Home, Inc. of Catasauqua is in charge of arrangements.
